Ava, chef Robert Del Grande's West Ave "kitchen and whiskey bar," announced today in a press release that tomorrow will be its last day of service. Rumors had been quietly swirling recently that Ava was not long for this world, and today brings confirmation that those rumors were true. Originally a see and be seen spot when it opened last year, the food never quite found its footing. In her review, Chronicle critic Alison Cook summed up Ava by writing "there’s nothing I really crave at Ava ... the restaurant is far from the citywide destination I’d love for Del Grande to deliver."
A few of the most popular menu items will find their way onto the menu at Alto, Del Grande's pizza restaurant that sits above Ava. Restaurant spaces inside the loop are highly desirable. Although there are whispers about who the next tenant will be, no one will go on the record to confirm that a lease has been signed. Eater will continue to follow the story.
