It's finally here, and it's definitely still featuring juicy burgers served from a bright yellow school bus. Bernie's Burger Bus owner Justin Turner opened his brick-and-mortar establishment on Monday and made good on his promise that patrons would "still going to be getting food out of a bus." Architectural firm Collaborative Projects (Underbelly, Haven, Pastry War, Dish Society, upcoming Julep) took on the task of installing a school bus inside the dining room. Think of it as an homage to the chef's intro to the Houston market, since Bernie's was a part of the first wave of mobile eateries in town.
Among the Bernie's menu items that will make their debut at the space are poutine, boozy milkshakes (made with Fluff Bake Bar's Rebecca Masson's treats), local beer and some beef patty alternatives. He'll also host chef pop-ups at his new space with non-burger dishes from familiar names around town. For the future, Turner is scoping out a space in Katy to open his next Bernie's Burger Bus outpost. In september, he told Eater that he was looking to open three brick-and-mortar stores in the next five years. Here now, take a look inside the vibrant, grade school-themed interior:
