Houston's Own Harold Wong Takes Home Title of 2011 Chefs Under Fire Champion

Chef Harold Wong of Azuma Sushi & Robata Bar cooked his ass off in the Chefs Under Fire finals held in Austin, Texas this past Sunday. An event designed to showcase emerging Texas chefs by pitting them against one another in a series of cooking challenges (Iron Chef-style, secret ingredients and all) paid off for Wong, who won the grand prize, a trip to Los Cabos.

Wong presented a dish of "leaf longhorn pattie paired with sautéed mushrooms accompanied with Idaho chips, fried kale, compressed infused strawberries, with a bit of blackberry mash and garnished with ito togarashi, green onions, and fried leeks, served on a streak of spicy beet purée" to take home the title and beat out competitors Kevin Martinez of Tokyo Cafe in Fort Worth and Daniel Valenzuela of Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts in Austin.
