Houston Independent School District (HISD) is making an effort to put more locally grown produce on cafeteria tables. Culinary Specialist for HISD, Brandon Lee, has been working in tandem with the Department of Agriculture and making the rounds to local farms on a "get-to-know-you" tour. In addition to fresher, local produce, both farmers and HISD are hoping to include an educational component to the new culinary approach that could include visits from farmers in the schools, cooking demonstrations and sampling.
