And the lawsuits filed over wage disputes are back. This time the defendant is Houston headquartered Pappas Restaurants Inc., parent company to eight different concepts, including Pappadeaux, Pappasito's, Pappas Bros. Steakhouse and more.
A former employee of Pappas owned restaurant, Yia Yia Mary's, near the Galleria, is claiming that the company "failed to pay Plaintiff and other wait staff the minimum wage." The practice in the center of the lawsuit is an "invalid tip pool" which "included workers who were not customarily and regularly tipped, including, [...] each restaurant’s dishwashing staff."
The lawsuit is seeking damages to "recover compensation for [...] unpaid minimum wages, including the full amount of tips received," and attorney's fees for the plaintiff as well as "current and former Waiters and Waitresses who were paid with a tip credit and required to contribute to a tip pool."
Pappas joins the growing list of Houston and nationwide restaurants being sued, many of them centered around similar wage disputes.
