It is somewhat unusual for restaurants that started in Houston's suburbs to try their luck inside the loop. Although Killen's plans to take the plunge later this summer, that move is the exception. Generally, inner loop diners have not embraced these efforts; for example, consider the recently closed Don Julio that attempted to take over the Cafe Bello space on lower Westheimer. The more popular pattern is for a restaurant like Grotto to begin life inside 610 and then expand outward to someplace like Sugar Land or Katy.
Another restaurant that seeks to buck this trend is 1252 Tapas Bar. Already successful in the Vintage Park development near Tomball and at a location in The Woodlands, 1252 announced yesterday in a press release that they are opening a new location in the Uptown Park space previously occupied by Berripop. The 2,700 square foot space will feature the same mix of Spanish-inspired cuisine, adult beverages and late hours that have made the previous locations successful. The space will open mid-summer.
