In response to an inquiry about the meaning of this tweet about how excited she is to work with the Anvil partners Bobby Heugel, Kevin Floyd and Michael Burnett, chef Erin Smith confirms that she has accepted the job of Culinary Director for the group. Smith deferred on providing details to Anvil's PR rep, who replied to Eater Houston's request for details with a polite no comment. Until the inevitable press release fills in the gaps, here's what it probably means.
The move extends the arraignment that began when Smith served as the consulting chef for newly opened coffee shop Blacksmith. Her work on Blacksmith's menu has already earned a dish of the week nod from Chronicle restaurant reviewer Alison Cook and the unofficial title of "Temple of the Biscuit." As culinary director, Smith can continue to oversee Blacksmith's food menu while redoing the food served at Anvil and developing a menu for upcoming cocktail bar Julep. Regardless of the specifics, one of Houston's most acclaimed restaurant groups just hired one of the city's most talented young chefs. It's the peanut butter and chocolate of chef and owner pairings.
