Gary R Wise

Chef LJ Wiley will revive his former restaurant Yelapa Playa Mexicana for two days, March 26 and 27, in the Kitchen Incubator space in north downtown. Open on Richmond from 2009 until 2011, Yelapa's take on coastal Mexican food earned two stars from Chronicle restaurant reviewer Alison Cook and a Houston Press award for best Mexican restaurant in 2010.

Wiley has reassembled much of his former team and will replicate many of the dishes that earned Yelapa so much praise. Joining him in the kitchen are Brett Storey, Jake Nelson and Steve Marques; Wiley may have a few more names, but he's still working on convincing them to sign on. As for the food, both lunch and dinner will feature his signature "Real Guacamole" about which Cook wrote that she "couldn't stop eating this dish, and marveling over its balance and ingenuity." There are also, as indicated in the menus below, ceviches, tacos and larger plates.
