A Look Inside Texas Monthly's Barbecue Issue

[-EHOU-]

Texas Monthly's Top 50 Barbecue Joints issue started showing up in mailboxes yesterday ahead of its arrival on newsstands Thursday. While the magazine revealed which restaurants are on the list last week, the 22-page spread includes ratings and comments about how each spot did earned a place in the illustrious rankings. There's also a supplemental piece in which barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn trades barbs with author John Shelton Reed over the merits of Texas versus North Carolina barbecue.

The issue itself becomes a guide for barbecue fans across the state. Houston BBQ Festival organizers J.C. Reid, who contributed to the list, and Michael Fulmer have said their interest in barbecue began when they decided to drive to all of the 2008 list's top five in the same day.

For the record, Houston-area restaurants scored as follows: Brooks' Place, 4.25; Corkscrew BBQ, 4.25; Gatlin's BBQ, 4.25; Leon's World's Finest In & Out (Galveston), 4; Virgie's Bar-B-Que, 4.
