Lately it seems like many upscale restaurants feel compelled to open the cool little brother to their high-end establishments. That's not to say that they don't make good food in these family-friendly iterations. Especially when Charles Clark and Grant Cooper, owners of Ibiza, Brasserie 19 and Coppa Ristorante Italiano, are behind the project and are including the creative force behind their success.
This September, the team behind Clark Cooper Concepts will open Coppa Osteria in West University at 5210 Morningside. The casual eatery will offer guests the option to unwind in a backyard-style setting or grab a pizza from the drive-through window. Chef Brandi Key will be writing the menu of charcuterie boards, house-made pasta, pizza and a list of rotating daily specials.
While many of these cool-little-brother spots have been successful (there's always a long, winding line of customers at Carrabba's-backed Mia's), it's a curious trend to follow in Houston, as major restaurant groups snatch up buildings around town to set up casual versions of their businesses.
