It's likely that the bags of buttery, garlicky crawfish at LA Crawfish's next home will be just as satisfying as the original, but we hope the mudbug shop won't lose the laid-back charm of the Blalock stand. While Kobecue on Richmond just recently closed, it's already being replaced by a new LA Crawfish restaurant, according to a tipster who sends us an image and says: "This is a really great spot for those of us that are forced to venture to the Blalock location for a beignet fry fix." The restaurant is in the same Greenway shopping center as Oporto, right around the corner from the Edwards Marq'E at Weslayan. Signage and inspection stickers are already up, and the new space looks like it'll be ready just in time for the beginning of crawfish season.
The original LA Crawfish is popular for being the ever-packed little outpost inside the food court at 99 Ranch Market in Spring Branch. It's known for its spicy Cajun to milder Vietnamese crawfish preparations, and for serving up a near-addictive crawfish pho. They were also my No. 2 suggestion for top crawfish in this Houston Press list from last year. This new location will afford them more space and foot traffic, not that they need it; the original location is always packed within hours of being open.
