Marfreless is almost back. When Houston's famous make-out bar closed last March, several patrons flocked to its famous blue door for one last...drink. The landlord, Weingarten Realty, had to defend itself after the bar owners hinted that an increase in their rental rate was the reason for the closure of that 40-year River Oaks establishment. Some Houstonians were very upset by the shutdown, others were nostalgic, one patron even told the Houston Press: "I saw people having sex upstairs and got the courage to do it myself." While it was expected to reopen late last summer, they had to push back the opening date. It is now slated to reopen in a few weeks. This is what they posted on their website in June:
Although we will be under new ownership, we promise the same unique atmosphere, premium menu, friendly staff, and neighborhood charm. All this comes with a complete renovation - from wires and carpet to the furniture you... sit on. You can expect an updated feel with the same Marfreless experience you've come to love. And don't worry, our upstairs seating and iconic blue door will remain.
We'll have to wait and see how the new ownership and renovations will affect the once dimly lit, secret-filled bar. We're just glad the door is staying, and the furniture upstairs is going. And judging by the images on their Facebook page, the interior has already changed plenty.
