Ready to sink your teeth into a hot melt-in-your-mouth donut for Krispy Kreme? Unless you're planning to travel outside of Houston soon, you'll have to wait until February 17. Earlier this month, the grand opening date for the 5611 Highway 6 North location was revealed while speculations about the next stores to open swirled. According to an Eater Houston tipster, one possible location is slated for Pasadena. Sun Holdings LLC, Doughnut franchisee for the Houston market, confirmed the rumor as well as the next stores to open in 2015.
The Pasadena Krispy Kreme will be located at 4061 Spencer Hwy (in a yet-to-be-built-lot between Comerica Bank and Denny's) and two more are in the works near the 610 Loop. Krispy Kreme will open in southwest Houston near NRG Stadium along Interstate 610 South and South Main while another is planned for the Galleria area. Details for the remaining six Krispy Kreme shops are most likely to be released next year.
Will Krispy Kreme succeed on Shipley Do-Nuts' home turf? Probably so. Dunkin' Donuts has managed to cut into Houston's donut market just fine and without any casualties (yet). The real challenge will come as more homegrown shops/trucks like Glazed The Doughnut Cafe, The Grove Do-Nutz & Deli, Doughmaker Doughnuts, and forthcoming Hugs & Donuts introduce Houstonians to gourmet donuts that offer sophisticated flavors and creative options.
