Sayonara to late night sushi hotspot stop, Cafe Japon, which closed its doors recently reports CultureMap. Earlier this summer, well-known local bartender and real estate hobbyist Chris Frankel spotted a listing for the Upper Kirby property on Loopnet. With Cafe Japon's lease up, what will become of the former Japanese restaurant? It's unknown who will occupy the 3915 Kirby Dr space and it's unclear whether Cafe Japon has moved further down U.S. 59.
The longtime sushi restaurant has possibly reopened at 2012 Rusk St under a new name, Japon Sushi. CultureMap reported the change from an industry insider today, but the East End newsletter EaDo in the Know, announced the opening last Thursday. Per the newsletter:
Check out EaDo's newest addition, Japon Sushi! Open Monday to Friday 11am - 2:30pm 5pm-10pm. Saturday 5pm-11pm. Sunday 12pm-9pm. Daily lunch special until 2:30pm starts from $7.95. Sushi starts from $1.25 to $1.50 all day.
The new restaurant doesn't lists late night hours as of now, but should be well received in that nook of East Downtown. Nearby BBVA Compass Stadium and music venue Warehouse Live will likely help to drive in traffic to the slowly growing neighborhood.
