Underbelly chef/owner Chris Shepherd will be competing in the Waffle House Smackdown in Charleston during the Food & Wine Festival this March. Shepherd will be going head to head with other award-winning chefs, including Michael Hudman of Memphis' Hog & Hominy's , Kevin Gillespie of Atlanta's Gunshow's and Mike Lata of Charleston's FIG, to determine who is the best Waffle House short order cook. The event will be hosted by Bon Appétit's Andrew Knowlton, who is a Waffle House fan. In anticipation of that competition, Shepherd had some training at Pasadena's Waffle House today, and he'll be back next Thursday, Feb. 27, from noon to 2 p.m. to continue honing his waffle skills.
