The James Beard Foundation announced the 2014 Restaurant and Chef Awards semifinalists. By Tuesday, March 18, 2014 this long list will be narrowed down to a list of finalists, and on Monday, May 5, 2014 the winners will be announced at the James Beard Foundation Awards in New York City. Houston contenders include some familiar names: Anvil Bar & Refuge was nominated for Outstanding Bar Program, Philip Speer (Uchi) was nominated for Outstanding Pastry Chef; Hugo Ortega (Hugo's), Chris Shepherd (Underbelly) and Justin Yu (Oxheart) were nominated for Best Chef: Southwest category. This is Ortega's third time being named a semifinalist, both he and Shepherd were finalists last year's awards.
