It is with a heavy heart and an empty stomach that we announce the poutine's exit from the Hay Merchant's food menu. The popular Montrose beer bar has seen a few menu updates in the time it's been open, and chef Chris Shepherd said that the poutine "had a good run, but it was its time to go." The popular dish has been replaced with black bean-topped nachos; some other notable menu staples have been replaced with seasonally appropriate dishes. So don't head there for happy hour expecting the usual until you check out the new food menu below. But first, Hay Merchant's poet laureate and executive chef Dax McAnear wrote this ode to the cheesy, gravy-topped fries:
Oh ye of the soggy fry,
That beefy sludge,
And squeaky curd.
We salute thee,
With blithered eye,
And ordered again... the third!
We will miss you.

Some highlights from the new menu:
Added: Hay Merchant's Simple Hummus, served with pita bread and seasonal veggies.
Added: The poutine will be replaced with nacho fries—refried black beans, cheddar cheese and redneck cheese sauce, Hay Merchant's cilantro sauce, red onions and jalapenos.
Changed: The pork sliders will become a full-sized sandwich with 6 ounces of pork on a Slow Dough hamburger bun with the same fixin's (vinegary BBQ sauce, pickles and coleslaw). Served with chips.
Changed: The grilled salmon will now be served with seasonal vegetables tossed with lemon, olive oil and Israeli cous cous.
