H-Town StrEATs Owners to Open Hugs & Donuts

The cats at ice cream parlor Fat Cat Creamery will soon be welcoming a new neighbor. H-Town StrEATs owners Matt Opaleski and Jason Hill will be opening a doughnut shop next door to the creamery at the Heights-area strip center on North Shepherd. Last fall, Houstonia's Katharine Shilcutt mentioned the upcoming shop saying that "while it would be a loss for the food truck scene, I can only imagine the doughnuts that may emerge from Hill and Opaleski's endless wellspring of creative cooking." Today, Swamplot reports that the name of that doughnut shop will be Hugs and Donuts, and that the 8,000-square-foot building will also house a Smoothie King.

H-Town StrEATs was among the first wave of gourmet food trucks to hit central Houston. Going on almost four years, the mobile eatery has developed a huge following and devoted fans who track it down for everything from short-rib-stuffed grilled cheese sandwiches to hot dogs covered in local craft beer-infused mustard. So the doughnuts won't just be your run-of-the-mill glazed treats. No word yet on when the new doughnut shop will open to the public, but the build-out is already under way.
