South African Spot Springbok Set to Open Downtown

Those who weren't privy to a sample of "bunny chow" at the 2014 Curry Crawl missed out on a taste of upcoming South African bar and restaurant The Springbok, a new lounge set to open downtown in the coming weeks. Co-owner Peter Walker already has a place by the same name in California, and now he's expanding to Houston with chef Seth Greenburg at his side. Greenburg will be preparing traditional African fare, including wild game and the aforementioned mutton dish. Named after the South Africa national rugby union, this upcoming eatery will also double as a sports bar with a giant plasma screen visible from the first-floor lounge and bar area as well as the second-floor balcony. Look for the new establishment to debut sometime in mid-June just next door to downtown's Flying Saucer. (See map at right.) Walker told the Houston Business Journal that it will be "the kind of place that you can wear flip flops and enjoy a good meal in a rugby pub atmosphere."

Joining Springbok in offering central Houston a taste of South Africa will be Peli Peli, the Vintage Park-based restaurant that has now signed a lease in the Galleria, where Gigi's used to be.
