Downing Street Is Rumored to be Closing Down

New, 1 comment

Local cigar aficionados will say they saw this coming: CultureMap is reporting that former cigar bar Downing Street has likely shut down for good. After receiving a tip of the closure, Eric Sandler writes that the website has already been taken down, and that an "employee at a neighboring business observed that the bar, which is usually open for lunch, was locked up all day Wednesday." Recently, some locals were outraged when the bar became a non-smoking establishment, leaving Houston proper without a place in which to enjoy cigars. Sandler notes that the bar's mixed beverage revenue decreased significantly in the months following the bar's transition.

If the rumor proves true, this would be just another Upper Kirby place to close down in just the last few months. Saint Genevieve, Brio Tuscan Grille and nightclubs Roak, OTC and Hendrick's Pub have all recently thrown in the towel, too. The good news for this neighborhood is that some establishments that are turning out world-class fare—places like Pondicheri and Nara—have prevailed despite all of the area's recent closures.
