It's a sad day for 'cue and burger lovers: Hubcap Grill owner Ricky Craig and Killen's Steakhouse/Killen's Barbecue owner Ronnie Killen's plans to open CK Steakhouse have flatlined. CultureMap noticed a series of Tweets commenting on the doomed would-be new meat mecca:
Brain storming a name for my new concept to open on 19th st next to Hubcap. Just me, myself, and I. Eatery/patio-lounge coming soon
— Ricky Craig (@Hubcap_Grill) June 27, 2014
Craig and Killen might be parting ways, but Craig is forging ahead with plans for a new establishment at that Heights-area address that happens to be next door to Hubcap's Heights location:
My new concept on 19th st will be old world style / New Orleans style. Just simple honest good food and craft beer & wine. Garden patio
— Ricky Craig (@Hubcap_Grill) June 27, 2014
Craig is also working on a Kemah location of Hubcap Grill, which had been expected to open last spring. According to CultureMap, Craig will buy the land on which CK Steakhouse was supposed to be built. Killen, for his part, is partnering with Bryan Caswell (Reef, Little Bigs) on a restaurant called Montrose Meat Market. It's a sad development for fans of both chefs, but it seems like it'll at least bring to fruition a few new great destinations for muffaletta, beer and meat lovers.
