Holy mothacluckah! Tomorrow's your last chance for The Bird House's fried chicken. The pop-up concept from H-Town StrEATs' Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski, along with Matt Keller of Saint Arnold, temporarily replaced Boil House while the Cajun shack took a hiatus after the end of crawfish season. With the start of mudbug season around the corner, Boil House is set to return, leaving The Bird House without a place to fry chicken and serve badass sides.
The good news is it's likely The Bird House's chicken will wind up on H-Town StrEATs' menu, but for those who aren't into tracking food trucks, it's uncertain if the trio will open a brick and mortar location in the Heights anytime soon. Hill spoke with CultureMap last month where he revealed the impact The Chicken Ranch, a nearby fried chicken shack, had on his restaurant. "I definitely saw my numbers go down a little bit when The Chicken Ranch opened. I think once Lance (Fegen, co-owner of Lee's Fried Chicken & Doughnuts) reopens it’ll probably be less." Hill also noted he and his partners may look into opening in Garden Oaks or Oak Forest instead.
The Bird House will commemorate its last day at 606 E 11th Street with a chicken and beer extravaganza Wednesday, January 14. Eat all the fried chicken (breasts, wings, thighs and drumsticks) you can muster, plus biscuits and sides for $20. And because beer is the next best item to pair with chicken besides waffles, the beer will be flowing too thanks to Keller's Saint Arnold connections. The party will take place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Bringing a lounge chair will be a good idea but having a designated driver is an even better one. Those not up for partying are welcome to use the drive-thru or call in their orders when doors open at 11 a.m.
