While it's not quite instant karma, it's definitely ironic if not fitting that Lee's Fried Chicken & Donuts has opened it's new glass doors in the former Church's Fried Chicken at 601 Heights Blvd.
F.E.E.D. TX, the group behind BRC Gastropub, Liberty Kitchen Oysterette and Liberty Kitchen set their sites on on giving the Heights a new fried chicken spot some time ago, but put the project on pause to wait for the perfect site to become available.
Lee's is cranking out the fried chicken fast, but make no mistake about it there's nothing fast about the process here. The chicken is brined on day one, soaked in buttermilk for day two, and it isn't until day three that the bird is dusted, dredged and fried and ready to eat. Don't overlook the chicken sandwiches or the fried chicken salad either, in addition to the fried chicken buckets and pieces a la cart.
The donuts pair perfectly, something that's so obvious and simple but something we haven't really seen done right yet in Houston. Glazed, caked, topped and baked fresh daily for about $1 - $2 depending. And with temps cooling down in Houston, keep an eye out for the upcoming patio since the dining room only holds a cozy 18 seats.
Get some of the gospel here.
