Hold off on finalizing any farewell gathering you may have lined up for El Tiempo 1308 Cantina's last day, at least that's what a tipster suggests. A tipster reveals Ronaldo Laurenzo's Tex-Mex Montrose outpost isn't going anywhere as previously reported.
After being informed by the property's owner that the land was to be sold for a residential development last fall, the restaurant had one of two choices: to close or relocate. Laurenzo chose to relocate, announcing in December that 1308 Cantina would move to 322 Westheimer after La Casa del Caballo closed its doors. However developers may have backed down from their plans to build on 1308 Montrose and other surrounding properties.
A call to El Tiempo 1308 Cantina confirmed the tip received through our tipline: the restaurant will remain open at its current address but Laurenzo says otherwise. "Not sure that possibility is being discussed. [It's] not at all a verified fact yet, just a rumor," according to Laurenzo who also disclosed through an email statement that the "apartment project may be delayed a few months or longer."
Whether or not the restaurant remains open is still up in the air for now. It should be noted when rumors of Laurenzo's intent to purchase La Casa del Caballo surfaced in November, he called them unfounded and false. A month later, however, El Tiempo announced its move to the now shuttered Mexican steakhouse. Perhaps this is a similar scenario where Laurenzo is concealing the truth once again.
As for El Tiempo 1308 Annex Cantina, the under-construction Tex-Mex spot on the corner of Westheimer and Taft, staff were excited to share the restaurant is moving forward. An anticipated April opening date is on the horizon.
With two quality Tex-Mex restaurants rumored for the 'Trose, will El Tiempo 1308 Cantina Annex on Westheimer spur a slightly different concept than the Montrose location should it remain open?
