After stints at Umi Sushi Bar and Grill and Nanami Sushi Bar in Austin, Jason Liao returned to Houston, ready to begin a new chapter in his life: owning his own restaurant. He achieved his dream in 2014 as chef/owner of Preview Modern Seafood Cuisine in Sugar Land. Receiving rave review after review for his globally influenced small plates and landing on Eater Houston's Heatmap three consecutive times, are there more pursuits ahead for the 27-year-old? Possibly.
While you were asleep, the Houston native shared an interesting post to his public Instagram page that's piqued interest. In the wee hours of the morning, the young chef revealed a teaser of what appears to be another restaurant on the horizon:
In Liao's online bio, is an explanation behind Preview's name and a hint that it's just the beginning. "'Preview', is named such because Jason feels that it is his first true debut in the restaurant scene, and that there is 'more to come'." Could Tides Modern Seafood Cuisine be next for Liao? And if so, will the restaurant that draws inspiration from Oxheart, Underbelly and shuttered Cove open within Houston or is a Sugar Land location in sight?
Eater reached out for a comment, but Liao wouldn't confirm if a second restaurant is in the works at the moment. If it is however, it's likely a far off plan. Liao's been heavily focused on Preview, which has only been open for ten months. Still, hopes are high and fingers are crossed that Liao's next concept is Houston bound.
