The first day of spring brings a little sad news for those who hoped to sink their teeth into a doughnut from Hugs & Donuts. The forthcoming gourmet doughnut shop in the Heights from partners Jason Hill and Matt Opaleski won't open this weekend.

Hugs & Donuts made the announcement on Facebook earlier today, noting, "we are still getting everything set up and also making sure our product is up to our standard before officially opening." With its newly installed neon sign, bright orange doughnut-shaped tables arranged, light fixtures fashioned from milk glass hanging from the ceiling and a milk tap system in place, the duo are making last-minute preparations to ensure their circular treats will be ready for the crowds that are sure to come.

The wait shouldn't be too long. "Soft opening will happen next wk for sure tho," shares the doughnut shop on Facebook. A peep at the menu released in December shows lemon meringue pie (fresh lemon curd filled with meringue), spiced cake, devils food cake donuts (dark chocolate with chocolate glaze and pretzel crunch), Gatlin's Barbecue kolaches and more.

While Hill and Opaleski focus much of their attention on their shop's first few months, their beloved gourmet food truck H-Town StrEATS is taking a hiatus. Taking the reins is friend and partner Matt Keller, former chef/partner of The Bird House, which closed last fall. Although the truck is sporting its non-fancy wrapped and continues to visits bars in the Heights and Washington Corridor, Keller is serving up chicken instead of tender short rib, macaroni and cheese burgers. Unfortunately, for now, it's only chicken tenders but it's damn good. Strips of chicken breasts are coated in a seasoned batter, fried to order and then served in all its delicious (and juicy) golden glory.

No longer H-Town StrEATS, the truck has been going by its new name Luv Me Tender since March 7. The menu is filled with chicken tender items (baskets and sandwiches), a grilled cheese and tacos. If the growing crowds at Liberty Station and other frequented bars are an indication, Keller may have another cult-following hit on his hands. Want to try it for yourself?
