As Washington Avenue begins to stabilize after last year's mass closings, another bar has bowed out of the once lively party district. Houstonia reports Winston's on Washington has shuttered. The website is offline and the monthly magazine also notes the last update on the bar's Facebook page was made March 13.
Once a hang out for four-legged friends and their owners, the bar catered to an underserved segment in 2012 at a time when Houston began to loosen laws towards dogs in areas where beverages and food were served. However a shift towards more upscale bars and eateries along the Washington Corridor (and possibly strict parking regulations) has left many bars without patrons. Instead party revelers turn to Midtown to let out steam while the strip is maturing with more grown-up options.
Despite bars and clubs closing left and right last year, perhaps the writing was on the wall for Winston's when owner Peter Tran, who also owns Ambrosia in the Museum District, turned the bar over to new management late last year.
It's likely someone will scoop of the property soon, possibly opening an upscale cocktail bar, beer bar or a restaurant. Whatever may come, there are still patio nearby that allow dogs. Though you won't be able to party with your pooch, the patios at Überrito Mexican Grill on Durham and Porch Swing Pub on Heights Boulevard remain dog friendly.
