After Monday's preview for the Astros' opening game, Jackson Street BBQ is ready to fling its doors all the way open. The joint venture from Bryan Caswell, Bill Floyd (both of Reef, El Real Tex-Mex Cafe, Little Bigs) and Gatlin's Barbecue's Greg Gatlin officially debuts today.
Once home to Houston Live sports bar, the space has been renovated to include a glass enclosed indoor smoke pit where diners can view meats being taken to and from the fire. The spacious dining area seats over 200 and includes two bars, which will offer cocktails, wine and beer. Jackson Street BBQ's laid-back, come-as-you-are vibe extends to the counter service where diners go through the cafeteria-style line dishing out smoked brisket, ribs, chicken, sausage and limited quantities of jalapeno cheddar biscuits with burnt ends. Braised collard greens, cole slaw, potato salad and baked beans are some of the classic Southern sides available. Homemade pies (baked off-site) provide a sweet finish to the meat-heavy meal.
In the coming months, seafood offerings will become available, including barbecue crab, shrimp and crawfish.
