Though not a combination that frequently springs to mind, Indian cuisine and doughnuts are a marriage made in heaven. After all, gulab jamun is totally a thing. Which is exactly why a forthcoming union between Upper Kirby’s Pondicheri and creative Heights fried dough shop Hugs & Donuts is particularly exciting.
CultureMap reports that Pondicheri’s upstairs bakery, the Bake Lab, will team up with Hugs & Donuts for a one-night-only pop-up dinner featuring sweet and savory pastries inspired by Indian flavors. As CultureMap’s Eric Sandler notes, Pondicheri Bake Lab pastry chef Alexa Hernandez goes back more than ten years with Hugs & Donuts owner Matt Opaleski, when the two worked the kitchen at Scott Tycer’s Aries, which closed in 2006.
Most notably, the collaboration will bring masala donut holes, and a donut bread pudding spiked with Indian whiskey sauce, all clocking in at less than $10 each. On the savory side, you’ll find drool-inducing butter chicken kolaches alongside an Indian-inspired take on bagel & lox topped with green chutney cream cheese spread, eggplant pickle, and Bengali mustard.
The pop-up event kicks off Friday, March 11 at 5 p.m., and lasts until 9 p.m. or until those sweet, sweet masala donut holes have all been devoured.
