It’s no secret to Houstonians how killer the local dining scene is, but the national recognition continues to pour in for local favorites. After Justin Yu brought home the James Beard Award earlier this year, one of Houston’s hottest new restaurants is earning praise from Eater’s national food critic.
Released today, Eater food critic Bill Addison’s list of the country’s best new restaurants includes a hearty shout-out for Helen Greek Food & Wine. Opened in 2015, the hits keep coming for the restaurant, which has earned plenty of praise from Houston’s local critics, in addition to a James Beard Award nomination for Best New Restaurant in 2016.
Read what Addison had to say about the white-hot Greek eatery below:
The greens and cheese pie, at first glance, resembles a gargantuan phyllo garlic knot wreathed with fresh oregano leaves and capers. Cut through its coiled form, though, and the crackling exterior gives way to a near-molten center of feta, kefalotyri, and mizithra cheeses encasing a mix of spinach, chard, dandelion, and collards. Dish after dish at Helen delivers such refined satisfaction.
Sommelier-owner Evan Turner also earned a shout-out for his expertly-assembled wine list, which Addison calls “one of the nation’s largest collections of Greek varietals.”
