Houston chefs are clearly on a roll when it comes to reality television. Just a few months after the city brought home its very first Chopped champion, Clutch City’s own Kevin Naderi took down Bobby Flay on Food Network last night.
The episode of Beat Bobby Flay, titled "Stop Drop & Roll" aired on Thursday, and Naderi easily made it through the first round before challenging Flay to prepare cabbage rolls. Flay went the traditional route, making Polish-style cabbage rolls filled with beef and saffron rice. Naderi, on the other hand, got creative. Using a sous vide, he slow-cooked cabbage leaves before filling them with a lamb and pistachio stuffing.
The judges overwhelmingly favored Naderi’s dish, and ultimately crowned him the winner. "It was a long day of shooting, but there was a live audience that kept me energized," said Naderi of his experience on the show. "[Bobby Flay] is a stand-up guy and I respect him a lot, I would take him on again any time."
Perhaps this win shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Naderi’s no newcomer when it comes to taking on other chefs in front of an audience. He appeared on a season 2 episode of "Guy’s Grocery Games," and won the Houston Press’s Iron Fork competition four times before throwing in the towel.
No word yet on whether or not you’ll be able to find those lamb & pistachio cabbage rolls at Roost anytime soon.
