After a year (or more) of planning and a heavy dose of uncertainty, The Pit Room is officially open and slinging smoked meats in Montrose. The brand new barbecue spot, located at 1201 Richmond Ave in a former “adult entertainment” store, finally held its grand opening over the weekend.
Originally slated for a spring opening, construction delays pushed back the arrival of The Pit Room. It also probably didn’t help that owner Michael Sambrooks split with pitmaster John Avila, who trained under Austin smoked meats master Aaron Franklin, unexpectedly earlier this year. Avila and Sambrooks went in “different directions,” evidenced by Avila’s recently-opened El Burro & The Bull barbecue spot at Conservatory.
Bramwell “Bram” Tripp is manning the pits, smoking up briskets, three different types of sausage, pulled pork, and other meaty delights. Also on offer are traditional barbecue sides like beans and potato salad, alongside more unique offerings like elotes and chips & queso. You’ll be able to finish off your meal with one of three decadent ice cream sandwiches made with house-baked cookies.
For now, The Pit Room will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. Look for the spot to add later hours in the coming weeks.
