Cleburne Cafeteria Reopens Today: It’s Back in Business After Devastating Fire

It’s no longer cash only, too

The restaurant that bills itself as "Houston's oldest and best cafeteria” is back in business. Cleburne Cafeteria was just about to celebrate its 75th anniversary when a fire completely destroyed the building last August. Owner George Mickelis promised to rebuild, and today Cleburne Cafeteria officially opens its doors once again.

The old-school spot at Bissonnet near Edloe in West U. is serving the same food diners know and love (classic cafeteria staples like chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and chocolate icebox pie). There’s one major upgrade that definitely brings the place up to 2017: diners will be able to pay with a credit or debit card instead of only cash.
