The wait has been long, but Bernie’s Burger Bus is officially ready to debut its third location in the Heights.
Originally a food truck — er, bus — Bernie’s has since expanded rapidly, opening three restaurants in just three years. The concept from Chef Justin Turner is known for its fancified burgers, made with Turner’s own signature blends of meats ground in-house, scratch-made condiments, and (of course) Bernie’s classic schoolroom vibe.
Inside, the new outpost is cool and cheerful which mimics its predecessor locations. Orange, green, and grey highlights are offset with light woods and colored metal chairs. Opposite the bar sits the original bus from Turner’s fledgling food truck days and whose number coincidentally reflects the birth year of Turner’s grandfather—and the business’ namesake—Bernie. An efficient patio hugs one side of the building for those seeking fresh air and plenty of considerately placed fans ensure comfort even in the sweltering heat of summer.
At the Heights outpost, the menu will offer a few new additions, most notably a selection of breakfast dishes like sliders, hash, and a massive, overstuffed bagel. Chicken sandwiches will also be available fried or grilled, and topped with everything from housemade pickles to barbecue sauce. Booze will also have a prominent feature at Bernie’s — make plans to hang out in the Teacher’s Lounge, where bartender Linda Salinas will serve up a menu of spiked shakes and sweet and savory cocktails.
The restaurant officially opens its doors at 7AM on July 31. Before you go, check out the space courtesy of Eater photographer Ellie Sharp.
