Smoky Barbecue Gelato is Now a Thing in Houston

It’s filled with smoked pecans, butterscotch, and barbecue sauce

In keeping with Texas’ obsession with all things barbecue, a smoky new ice cream just landed at Houston’s own SweetCup Gelato & Sorbet Originale.

As part of a collaboration with barbecue joint El Burro & the Bull, the gelato mashup called “El Burro’s Butterscotch BBQ” is made with tamarind barbecue sauce, smoked Texas pecans and smoked butterscotch. Eater has reached out for more details on how frequently this smoky flavor will be on offer, but the shop’s Instagram feed indicates that it is currently available at SweetCup’s Montrose and Ella Boulevard locations.

This isn’t the first time barbecue is finding its way into frozen treats. Last year, a Kansas City ice cream shop made its own version of barbecue ice cream spiked with burnt ends, barbecue sauce, and caramel. And in 2018, an Australian gelato shop took things even further by making a barbecue gelato that was topped with tomato relish and potato chips. Apparently, it tasted a little bit like cream cheese.

Adventurous eaters will be able to test drive the new flavor at either of SweetCup’s locations, open Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday 12:30 to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 12:30 to 11 p.m.
