West Village whiskey hot spot The Spaniard is going on a multi-city U.S. tour, starting with Houston next month.
The first stop is slated for Thursday, November 7, at Penny Quarter. The buzzy all-day cafe and wine bar (1424 Westheimer Road) debuted in August in the space that once housed nightclub Etro.
The Spaniard opened in spring 2017 with Ai Fiori and Nobu alum PJ Calapa manning a menu of inventive bar snacks. The tour’s timing coincides with the one-year anniversary of Compass Box’s Story of the Spaniard whisky release.
The one-night bar takeover at Penny Quarter will naturally star the malt whisky blend, aged in Spanish red wine, sherry, and virgin French oak barrels. Cocktails call for a Manhattan with Averna amaro and orange bitters; the “Fast Buck” with lime, ginger, P.X. sherry, and Peat Monster; and a shot-and-beer combo.

The Spaniard comes from Bua Bar Group, the hospitality team behind a gamut of trendy NYC bars-with-good-food like Wilfie & Nell, The Wren, and The Penrose.
Four other stops are slated for D.C. on November 14; Louisville on November 19; Chicago on November 20; and Miami on December 11.
Penny Quarter comes from acclaimed duo Justin Yu and Bobby Heugel, who opened up new European restaurant Squable this spring as a follow-up to their Eater 2017 bar of the year Better Luck Tomorrow.
