Houston Breweries Will Produce ‘Black is Beautiful’ Beer to Raise Funds for Police Brutality Reform

Several Houston breweries have joined forces with beer-makers across the country to produce a “Black Is Beautiful” beer that will raise money for organizations working on police reform.

The initiative, organized by Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, encourages breweries to produce their own riff on Weathered Soul’s Black Is Beautiful oatmeal stout and donate all proceeds to “local foundations that support police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged,” along with a pledge from each brewery to commit to the “long-term work of equality.”

According to the project’s website, breweries in 35 states across the country have signed up to produce the Black Is Beautiful beer, including Battlehops Brewing in Katy, and Houston’s own Ingenious Brewing, Sigma Brewing Company, and Urban South Brewing Company, Astral Brewing, and Holler Brewing Company.

To facilitate the production of the Black Is Beautiful beer, Weathered Soul has published the recipe for the oatmeal stout online, along with a label design that they’re asking all participating breweries to use and customize with their own logos.

“As someone who has personally dealt with the abuse of power by the police, this recent turmoil the country is facing has hit home for me,” Weathered Souls founder Marcus Baskerville wrote on the project’s website. “As I write this, I contemplate how the country can move forward, how we as the people, can create change, and what it will take for everyone to move forward with a common respect for one another. For us, we feel that this is our contribution to a step.”
