This is my go-to place for chaat, smaller Indian plates that satisfy a craving without leaving you feeling too full. Veggie options for the spice-addicted abound. Another good thing: A three-piece order of samosas is under $3 here.

Sunshine's Health Food Store & Deli

This South Union food store doubles as a vegetarian deli. It was selling great kale salads before they became a "Thing" at fancy, high-end establishments in town. The avocado po-boy is a personal favorite.

Pat Greer's Raw Vegan Kitchen

It's a vegan restaurant in a small house in Midtown/Montrose--so don't pass it up when looking for it. Although it's gourmet vegan, the prices are surprisingly reasonable. And the hemp and sage burger is delicious, even for a carnivore.

Quan Yin Vegetarian Restaurant

It had us at asparagus soup, but but the tofu and the soy "pork" rolls are great, too. Bonus: It will be open Christmas Eve, Christmas and NYE.

This former food truck is now a brick-and-mortar shop at Wheeler and Almeda. Owners Matti Merrell and Rodney Perry use buckwheat patties and vegan cheese to make flavorful, ultra filling burgers. Don't leave here without ordering a fruit blend shake to go with your Big Tex Burger.

Shri Balaji Bhavan

The vegetarian biryani here will make you forget about meat, and dosas are a nice breakfast option for when you're stuck in a morning rut.

Radical Eats

This once small vegan Mexican restaurant moved into a massive Montrose space (formerly Roots Bistro) and added an omnivore-friendly menu. It opened to the public at this location just four months ago. Even with meat dishes added, the fried avocado tacos are still a personal favorite.

Field of Green's

The Upper Kirby restaurant isn't always consistent, but if you catch them on a good day, you'll be happy with your grilled cheese and hummus wrap. Plus, it's convenient for the outside-the-Loop averse.

Udipi Cafe

Veggie food is never bland or boring here. Choose a thali for a good sampling, or grab a dosa. Have raita or mango lassi on hand to quell the heat.

Loving Hut

If you can't commit to one cuisine for your vegetarian meal, head here. Everything from Asian to American to Italian influences are on the menu. The curry and eggplant were surprisingly good on a recent visit.
