On Friday, we asked Eater readers to submit their favorite Chinese-American restaurants. After sifting through the responses, here are 11 restaurants to satisfy cravings for staples such as sweet and sour chicken or kung pao beef.

One thing worth noting is that introductions for all these restaurants could begin, "This family-owned business in an anonymous looking strip center has earned a reputation for offering a good value and friendly service." A reader says that the new chef has elevated the food at this Montrose institution by adding a Szechuan flair to the dishes. The imperial pork rolls also earn raves.

Qin Dynasty

Lavish decor helps this restaurant appeal to clients that come from West University and River Oaks to sample American-Chinese staples such as sesame chicken, lettuce wraps and chicken-filled fried dumplings. Prices are a little higher than some of the other places on the map, but that fits the neighborhood, too.

Daniel Wong's Kitchen

It's an old-school, Bellaire institution with minimal decor. Fans appreciate the healthier options on the menu and dishes not found at other Chinese restaurants, such as gumbo.

Hunan Chef

The only buffet on this map. It serves as a guilty pleasure for some. The smaller selection means that dishes stay fresh rather than lingering on the steam table.

The Rice Box

Only a year old but already one of the most popular new-style food trucks in Houston. It's all about the General Tso's chicken here: order it spicy with a fried egg over fried rice for maximum flavor.

Ta Hua Chinese Restaurant

Another restaurant that's improved recently thanks to remodeling and a new chef. Dishes such as hot and spicy shrimp and pork belly break the mold from more traditional Chinese-American fare.

Canton Chef

For Katy diners, it's the Chinese restaurant of choice. Steamed dumplings here are particularly tasty.

Hin's garden restaurant

The classics are what's best here, as the Galleria-area lunch crowds that pack it every day can attest. That means beef with broccoli and kung pao chicken are winners.
