From the East End Bohemeo's to ivy league shots of espresso, incoming collegiate fellows and those of us needing a caffeine fix near campus should heed our dean's list for college coffeehouses in the inner loop.

Being the fourth largest city in the U.S. — Houston, is home to many colleges and universities, but our list focuses on campuses that are strictly within the loop. Here are some of the spots college kids and those of us long past the age of late-night study sessions can go for a caffeine fix.

Dot Coffee Shop

Since 1967, this 24/7 spot has been dishing up classic comfort food and cups of joe. The breakfast menu sports favorites like Heuvos Ranchero, the chicken fried steak wins raves, and the coffee’s still available day and night.

The Nook Cafe

Offering a variety of home-made juices, as well as pastries and desserts, this UH campus favorite even offers Cougar Blend coffee for the caffeine-needy. Weekly movie nights, live music and Sunday Fundays with $4 mimosas make this a great hangout, whether you’re a UH student of just dropping by.

Funky, historic Eastwood is home to this laid-back spot, serving up locally roasted java, hot and cold specialty coffee drinks, and an array of pizzas, sandwiches and Mexican-style munchies. There’s a weekly Beatles Open Mic Night and revolving music acts, too.

The Doshi House

For TSU students, UH Coogs, or anyone looking for a fantastic selection of teas and vegetarian bites, Doshi is a must. The coffeehouse is situated in the Third Ward and is a relative newcomer on the coffeehouse scene, but the casual and artsy vibe, along with plenty of community events (and free wifi) make Doshi a standout in the neighborhood.

Rice: Coffeehouse

When you buy your coffee here, you’re supporting an entirely student-run business, and you get to experience a boisterous, eclectic atmosphere. Inexpensive, locally brewed Katz’s coffee tops the menu offerings, which also include specialty coffee drinks (the mocha is particularly amazing), locally sourced pastries and yummies from Oh My! Pocket Pies.

Mercantile

Brewing Amaya Roasting Company coffee, this Rice Village spot across from Torchy’s Tacos is an open, inviting space where coffee is elevated to an art form. Part espresso, part specialty grocery store, Mercantile is all experience.

The café au laid is lovely here, but the pastries are the star of the show at this French-feeling, cozy Rice Village enclave. House-made sandwiches put in appearances at lunchtime, and this is the sort of place where you want to linger over your cup.

Tucked into the Museum District, Bosta serves those who need both coffee and wine, with eclectic offerings that showcase the spot’s fun and flair. Lattes, hot chocolate, cold brews, the iconic flat white and espresso all make an appearance on the menu, as do an assortment of continental pastries, hot and cold sandwiches, cheese and munchies.
